What is Branch Up Active?
Branch Up Active is our new sports mentoring programme that provides extra-curricular sports-based activity days on Saturdays for children aged 8-11, with the aim of increasing their self-esteem and confidence. Each participating child is paired with a student volunteer, who acts as a mentor and positive role model throughout the session. The programme is designed to give children access to extracurricular opportunities that they may not have tried before, as well as developing positive relationships with university students and other children.
How you become a volunteer?

  • Complete a DBS check and safeguarding video
  • You’re ready to start volunteering!
Placement experience
Branch Up Active takes place over the course of the academic year and will involve five or six activity days. We would like you to attend as many of these as possible so that everyone gets the best experience from the programme.
As a volunteer you will be placed 1:1 with a child for the duration of the activity day. You will chat to them, support them throughout the day, and help them to engage with the other children and volunteers. Ultimately, your role is to help them have fun! Examples of what activities might include are bowling, rock climbing, circus skills, kayaking, society-led sports sessions and much more.
A member of Bristol Hub staff will be present throughout the day to support you with any issues. You will have a briefing prior to each activity session, and will debrief following the end of the day to report any issues and feedback.
What will you get out of it?
Volunteering with Branch Up Active will allow you to develop a wide range of skills and experience including:
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Adaptability
  • Time management
  • Mentoring
  • Pastoral support
  • Behaviour management
This volunteering opportunity is excellent for anyone who wants experience working in schools and with young people, or is exploring a career in education, youth work, social work, community outreach or sports mentoring/leadership.
We are happy to provide a reference if you take part in at least four activity days.
Branch Up Active is extremely fun and sociable. Just like the children involved, you get to take part in activities that you may have never tried before. There is also plenty of opportunity for social events amongst student volunteers outside of activity sessions.
Why do children need Branch Up Active?
Many children in Bristol do not take part in extracurricular activities, often due to their socio-economic situation or a lack of confidence. Missing out on these activities can have a significant impact on a child's educational attainment and on their social and emotional well-being and development.
Branch Up aims to give these children equal opportunity to experience extracurricular activities, think critically about their health, wellbeing and lifestyle, expose them to positive role models, and help them to raise their aspirations for future life.
Training and support
All of our programmes are supported by students and staff. As part of Branch Up Active, you will have the staff team (Bristol Hub Manager and the Projects Officer) to speak to at any time.
The staff team will be leading on your selection workshop, initial training and additional training provision (behaviour management, routes into education etc) throughout Branch Up Active, as well as any issues that arise with the children the project supports. The staff team will be in touch with you during your placement to get mid-year and end of year feedback, which is required from all volunteers. Volunteers will also be debriefed about any issues with their mentee which they may want the school to support or follow up from.
Why not volunteer with a friend?
Volunteering for Bristol Hub is social and you'll have the chance to meet many like-minded people, but why not ask a friend to sign up with you too?
