Our volunteers have been supporting the local community in Bristol throughout this time of need. Here's what we have been up to and how you can get involved next year.

Applications for our Covid-19 response projects will reopen in September. If you'd like to be notified when they open, please click 'Apply' to register your interest. Schools Plus Virtual will be a Schools Plus project, Phone Friends/ Friends with Pens will be a LinkAges project.

If you want to talk more about supporting the community at this time please get in touch with Sophie on [email protected] to chat.

What have we been doing?

We have been supporting young people and older people in the community through two main projects.

Schools Plus Virtual tutors have been offering one to one Maths, Science and English virtual tutoring sessions to year 10 pupils, at a critical time in their education. The closure of schools has meant a lot of young people have been left without academic support which has only widened the preexisting educational inequality and attainment gaps our volunteers usually tackle. Volunteers have also been creating videos and worksheets for our partners to use in their virtual schools. Hear from one of our tutors below.

Phone Friends and Friends with Pens volunteers have been creating new friendships with older people by sending letters and making phone calls. We have been working with St Monica Trust to tackle social isolation amongst their residents, which has been exacerbated by strict shielding and social distancing measures. St Monica Trust also have a video platform for residents, which features some videos of support from familiar faces recorded by our regular LinkAges volunteers.

In addition to these projects, Bristol Hub has created and delivered activity packs to our Branch Up young people, organised the #CHALLENGEACCEPTED social media campaign to encourage students and young people to stay active and recruited a new committee to organise even more events and opportunities in the next academic year.

What are our plans for next year?

From September 2020 we want to continue offering virtual ways for our volunteers to give back to the community in Bristol. Whether you have volunteered with Bristol Hub before, or you are a new face, we will be delivering training for Schools Plus Virtual and Phone Friends/ Friends with Pens volunteers at the start of the term.

If you'd like to be notified when applications open, please click 'Apply' to register your interest. Schools Plus Virtual will be a Schools Plus project, Phone Friends/ Friends with Pens will be a LinkAges project.

Please note, plans for next year are dependent on the needs of our partners and government guidelines. You can read more about how we're adapting projects and responding to Covid-19 here.

Looking for partners

As we continue to return to a new normal, Bristol Hub is looking for partners and members of the community who feel they would benefit from working with student volunteers. To discuss working together please contact Sophie on [email protected] to chat.
